Every Fourth of July, families across Hobbs gather to celebrate the freedoms that have shaped our nation for generations. Flags wave from front porches, neighborhoods come together for cookouts, and stories are shared around picnic tables as fireworks light up the New Mexico sky.

For many older adults, Independence Day is more than a holiday. It is a reminder of a lifetime spent watching America grow, change, and overcome challenges. Many of the seniors we have the privilege of serving are veterans who answered the call to protect our country. Others built families, businesses, churches, schools, and communities that continue to shape Hobbs today. Together, they have witnessed some of the most remarkable changes in American history, from black-and-white television to smartphones, from handwritten letters to instant video calls.

As our nation looks ahead to the upcoming Semiquincentennial, the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, this is a meaningful time to reflect on the freedoms that continue to matter most. Among them is something deeply personal: the freedom to continue aging in place, surrounded by familiar memories, cherished routines, and the people who matter most.

Home Is More Than a Place

For many seniors, home represents decades of life.

It is where children were raised, birthdays were celebrated, holidays were shared, and memories were created that cannot be packed into moving boxes.

A Story from Hobbs

Mr. James has lived in Hobbs for more than fifty years.

Every Independence Day, his family gathers at the same home where countless holidays have been celebrated. The grandchildren run through the yard with small American flags while neighbors stop by to visit before the evening fireworks.

This year, before everyone arrived, his granddaughter noticed him sitting quietly on the front porch.

He smiled as he pointed toward the street.

“I’ve watched this neighborhood change my whole life,” he said. “I’ve watched men come home from service, children grow into parents, and now I’m watching my great-grandchildren make memories in the same yard.”

As the family arrived, laughter quickly filled the porch once again.

A caregiver helped with a few small tasks inside the house so Mr. James could focus on what mattered most, spending time with the people he loved.
